Governor Jim Douglas made history yesterday, becoming the first Vermont Governor to veto a state budget.

It's something the Governor had promised to do for some time, unhappy with the budget passed in May by the Democratic Majority in Montpelier, but both sides said publicly they hoped a compromise could be reached first.

The Governor's formal veto yesterday sets up a showdown at the statehouse later this morning, as Democrats try to cobble together a two-thirds majority needed to override the Governor's veto.

We got in touch this morning with Middlebury College Political Scientist Eric Davis, and asked him if he was surprised that Douglas put himself in the spotlight of history by vetoing the budget.
