Vt. to permanently close at least 3 rest areas

Friday, 02/20/09 6:06am

The state's planning to close at least three highway rest areas permanently and cut hours at others on a cost-cutting move.

State officials recently closed rest areas on Interstate 91 in Hartford and Interstate 89 in Sharon and Highgate. An I-89 northbound facility in Randolph will shut down by the end of the month.

Officials say that due to ongoing budget gaps the three rest areas, except Randolph, will remain closed.

Lawmakers also are leaning toward reducing hours at the 17 remaining spots, starting in July.

Gerry Myers, Vermont's Commissioner of Buildings and General Services, says the state has more pressing human services programs that need funding.

The plan is expected to save the state about $1.4 million.
