Decision on Vermont Yankee delayed

Monday, 12/08/08 6:34am

The Legislature's anticipated vote on whether Vermont Yankee can keep operating after its current license expires in 2012 may not come this session.

Key lawmakers now say they are waiting for more information before they make a decision.

They expect to get an independent review of the plant's structural reliability in late January and an assessment of the costs of alternatives to Vermont Yankee later this winter. Senate President Peter Shumlin said he also wants to be sure that the plant's radioactive waste will be dealt with.

The delay concerns utilities who buy electricity from the nuclear power plant and Vermont Yankee, which wants to start planning for equipment upgrades.
