Smokeout in Vermont focuses on 'independent quitter'

Today is the American Cancer Society's 33rd Annual Great American Smokeout.

The Smokeout was launched in 1976 to give smokers a designated day to abstain from cigarettes, in hopes they might quit for good.

The Vermont Department of Health is unveiling a new smoking cessation program to coincide with this year's Smokeout.

It's called "Your Quit, Your Way".

The objective is to reach what the department calls "independent quitters"...people who want to stop smoking in their own way, on their own terms.

Sheri Lynn is the Tobacco Control Chief for the Health Department.

Lynn says smokers now have access to free tools and strategies available through the Vermont Quit Network.

(Lynn) We have pedometers, so that instead of taking a cigarette break you can go out and take a walk and track your steps. We also have things to distract your hand, putty or worry stones, and you can get podcasts and hear about the proven tips and strategies to keep smoke-free.

Lynn says the program also offers free nicotine gum, patches and lozenges.

American Cancer Society officials say that one new obstacle they face this year is the uncertain economy.

A recent study conducted by the American Legacy Foundation found that 77% of current smokers report increased stress levels due to the economy.

Sheri Lynn says that in the long run, quitting smoking will reduce stress levels.

(Lynn) You could actually improve the stress that you're feeling by substituting the smoking for physical activity, doing something that gets you out in the fresh air and moving and that has some great benefits of dealing with the stressers in your life, and you actually would be able to save some money too, cigarettes are not inexpensive, and in the long run you'll save many on health care costs.

More information about smoking cessation is available by calling 1-800-QUITNOW, or visiting the Vt. Quit Network website, VTQuitnetwork.org.
