Barre race settled, but more recounts await

Thursday November 20, 2008

BARRE, Vt. (AP)

Democrat Paul Poirier's narrow election day victory over state Rep. Leo Valliere has withstood a recount, with Poirier prevailing by 25 votes.

Meanwhile, recounts have been set for five other legislative races on the Nov. 4 ballot.

On Tuesday, a hand recount at Washington County Superior Court ended with Poirier's vote total at 918, to 893 for the Republican incumbent.

Recounts in state House races in Bennington County, Chittenden County and Orange-Caledonia are set for Monday, and the recount in a Rutland County race is expected to be held Dec. 3 or Dec. 4.

Also set for Dec. 3 is a recount in a state Senate race in Chittenden County.
