State plans to send inmates to Alabama

More Vermont inmates could be housed out of state.

Corrections officials hope to sign a contract with a new Alabama prison to send up to 80 prisoners there.

Outgoing Corrections Commissioner Robert Hofmann says the focus will be offenders who are "unacceptable to be placed with a majority of other prisoners."

The state hopes to send between 60 to 80 violent offenders to the Perry County Correctional Center in Uniontown, Ala.

Hofmann says some of the state's inmates currently housed in prisons in Oklahoma, Tennessee and Arizona could be moved to Alabama.

Once the move is complete, about 10 percent of the state's out-of-state inmates would be in Alabama and most of the others at a facility in Kentucky.
