Vermont Yankee emergency system temporarily disabled

(Host) An emergency notification system at the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant was temporarily disabled this week.

Yankee uses sirens as well as a special radios to alert the public in case of emergency.

Plant officials say problems with a phone line that connects the plant to a radio transmitter caused the system to fail Tuesday evening. Yankee spokesman Rob Williams says the plant went to a back up system, and then restored the primary phone link.

(Williams) "There will always these types of minor issues with electronics and with the phone lines and radio signals.  At that time there were two back up systems that were in place and switched actually to the first one.''

(Host) Yankee officials were required to report the incident to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
