Vermont Edition Interview: Court case tests animal negligence responsibility

Next session, the Vermont Supreme court will hear a case about whether or not pet owners can collect non-economic damages when their animal dies from negligence. The original case began in 2002, when Vermont residents Robert and Susan Goodby lost their two cats because of a toxic medication. Veterinarians say they will face an undue burden if pet owners can sue them for their emotional loss when an animal dies.

Steven Wise, Adjunct Professor at Vermont Law School, has taught "Animal Rights Law" at VLS for 18 summers. He has practiced animal protection law since 1981 and is representing the Goodbys.  Doctor Karen Bradley is a veterinarian and one of the owners of Onion River Animal Hospital in Montpelier.  They spoke with VPR's Jane Lindholm about the case.
