State police probe third theft of copper wire
Vermont State Police say a utility substation in Charlotte has been hit by burglars looking for copper wire for the third time since May 27.
Copper wire has been among the favorite targets of thieves recently, as they seek to take advantage of high prices in the scrap metal market.
The latest theft at the Vermont Electric Power Co. substation on Ferry Road in Charlotte occurred overnight and was reported Monday morning.
Utility officials say substations can be very dangerous because of the high-voltage equipment, and that would-be thieves have been electrocuted trying to steal wire elsewhere.
