Sharon rest area recycles water to be green

Tuesday July 22, 2008
Jane Lindholm

Sharon, VT

Driving north on 89, you cross from New Hampshire into Vermont and a few miles later realize you need to take a break-stretch your legs, use the restroom, get some fresh air.  So you turn into the Sharon Rest Area.  Now, this may look like any other rest area at first glance.  But take a closer look and you'll realize there's something different going on here.  There are signs in all the restrooms that say "recycled water" and there are a lot of tropical plants.

As part of our ongoing "Green Series" we drove to the Sharon rest stop to see the "Living Machine" and discovered how every flush of the toilet helps the facility stay green.
