Vt. Republican chairman: Salmon's absence can be issue in campaign

A leading Vermont Republican says the absence of Democratic state Auditor Tom Salmon who is being deployed to the Middle East is a legitimate issue for the fall campaign.
Although Randy Brock, the former auditor whom Salmon narrowly defeated, indicated he likely wouldn't challenge Salmon again, out of respect for his military service, GOP Chairman Rob Roper says voters in Vermont should have the option of having someone on the job on day one.
Salmon is expected back in February or March at the earliest.
Roper's comments led U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy to issue a statement, saying any Vermonter has a right to challenge Salmon but to make his service as a member of the U.S. Navy a reason to defeat him is out of line.
Roper said in response that he pretty much agreed with Leahy. He said he respects Salmon's decision to go overseas but doesn't think any candidate should go unopposed.
