Cigarette tax to increase on July 1

Monday June 9, 2008

MONTPELIER, (AP)

Starting on July 1, Vermont smokers are going to have to dig deeper into their pockets to light up.

The state cigarette tax will increase from $1.79 per pack $1.99 per pack.

Once the higher tax is implemented, Vermont will have the 11th highest tobacco tax in the United States.

Over the last two decades Vermont has steadily increased its cigarette tax. And in that time period the number of smokers has dropped from 25 to 18 percent of the population.

Legislators hope the new tax will keep young people from picking up the habit.

Revenue raised from the tax will help fund state health care programs.
