Vermont ranks 5th in nation in graduation rates

Friday, 06/06/08

- BRATTLEBORO, Vt. (AP)

A new report says Vermont's high schools have the fifth-highest graduation rate in the nation.

The report, by Editorial Projects in Education, a non-profit based in Maryland, says more than 80 percent of Vermont's high school students got diplomas in 2005.

The national average was 70 percent, with New Jersey leading the way at 83 percent.

The state's director of standards and assessment Gail Taylor says the report is good news but that school officials are constantly striving to do better and get everyone to graduation.
