Numerous bills are coming to the floor in the House and Senate chambers as the Legislature looks to adjourn in the next few weeks. Drunk driving, campaign finance reform, road repairs, gay marriage and the governor's economic stimulus plan were all topics of discussion at the Statehouse in recent days. We also learned that foreclosures in Vermont are on the rise - as well as gas prices.
These are some of the voices in the news this week:
Foreclosure
numbers up in first quarter of 2008
(Tom Candon, Deputy
Commission for Banking) "Vermont's been rated 50th for the most part for the number of foreclosures for
the last year. That being said, there are people who are having trouble making
their loan payments."
Economy
will be major issue in gubernatorial race
(Gov. Jim Douglas) "The purpose of an economic stimulus
program is to encourage more investment, the creation of more jobs, more
entrepreneurs making a commitment to Vermont.
And we're not going to do that with tax increases."
Senate
overrides Governor's veto of campaign finance law
(Sen. Jeanette White) "So it's important both for the
perception that campaigns aren't for being bought and also to give people more
incentive to participate themselves on a smaller level."
Commission
stops short of recommending gay marriage
(Commission Chair Tom Little) "We're asking people to
take what these Vermonters - these gay and lesbian couples and their friends
and families - what they said seriously, and to take a serious look at the
deficiencies that they believe they have in their legal and social and family
lives."
"Operation Smooth Ride" hits bump in road
(Rep. Richard Westman) "We haven't increased town highway
aid in five years. It's been level-funded. And the towns are facing some pretty
significant increase in the cost of their projects, just the same as the state
is."
House
approves tougher drunken driving rules
(Rep. Kathy Lavoie) "Many of us believe that multiple DUI
offenses and the horrific consequences they can bring is one of the most
critical problems facing our state."
Sanders
wants to take action on gas prices
(Sen. Bernie Sanders) "People will tell you, `You
know, we are really frightened about $3.50, $4 a gallon for gas. And, frankly,
the White House has done virtually nothing about it. But neither has
Congress.''
