Community devastated by death of mother and two children

Police are still trying to figure out why 40 year old Nicole Waring of Wolcott avoided a would-be rescuer and plunged into the Wardsboro Brook carrying her 6-year-old daughter on Saturday.
Both died, and the body of 2 1/2-year-old Grace Waring was found yesterday, although police haven't said how she got into the brook.
According to police, a Vermont State Police sergeant tried to rescue Waring from the brook but she ignored his pleas and entered the roiling waters before being swept away.
Police say they know of no reason why Waring-who disappeared with the girls from her parents' home in Wardsboro about 1 a.m. Saturday-would be afraid of police or trying to avoid them.
Family friend Nancy Allen of Elmore described Waring and her husband as a happy couple who doted on their girls.
Warren Miller, who owns a store near where Waring lived in Wolcott, says the deaths of the three are a tragedy for the whole community. He says the community is devastated.
