Primary turnout breaks 1980 record
Excitement over the primary helped Vermont set a record for primary election turnout on Tuesday.
Vermont Secretary of State Deb Markowitz says about 41 percent of the state's registered voters cast ballots. That eclipsed the previous primary record of 39 percent turnout set in 1980.
Markowitz credits the Democratic primary with driving people to the polls. She says turnout in traditionally Republican parts of the state wasn't as high because there was little excitement surrounding the GOP vote.
Not all towns have reported their results, so Markowitz says the percentage could go higher.
