Legislators are trying to make sure that no town meeting budget votes are affected by a recent Vermont Supreme Court decision.
The court ruled February 8 that sections of municipal budgets could not be divided into separate ballot items. The court said the vote must be on the entire budget and not on separate highway, police or recreation budgets.
Lawmakers are trying to rush through a bill that would allow ballot votes on sections of town budgets before Town Meeting Day next week.
