VT Edition Interview: Willard Sterne Randall & Garrison Nelson on the role of religion in politics

Tuesday December 11, 2007
Jane Lindholm

Colchester, VT

When John F. Kennedy was running for President in 1960, much was made about the fact that he was Catholic. So a couple of months before the election, Kennedy stepped to the podium in front of the Greater Houston Minesterial Association, to allay the fears of the Christian majority. Nearly fifty years later religion is still an issue. Just a few days ago Republican Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney gave his own speech about the role of religion in politics.

Willard Sterne Randall is the Professor of History at Champlain College and author of two presidential biographies. Garrison Nelson is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Vermont. They spoke with VPR's Jane Lindholm about the role of religion in politics.
