Vermont musicians perform at Red Sox opener

Thursday October 25, 2007
Lynne McCrea

Colchester, VT

There were a number of Vermont connections to last night's opening game of the World Series in Boston last night. The Green Mountain Boys flew over Fenway Park for a rousing opening of the game...

And several members of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra were part of a Boston Pops ensemble that played the National Anthem.

Conductor John Williams led the ensemble in a special arrangement of the Star Spangled Banner.

Mark Emery plays trumpet with the VSO, and is one of those who performed last night at Fenway. He says he was lucky to be called up from a list of substitute players.

(Emery) "Basically the stars aligned and landed my name on that list, so I feel very fortunate... and, especially since they won-I'm thrilled not to be connected in any way with the Red Sox losing a game. So, overall it was incredibly fun and to be able to be part of that history in this town is really quite phenomenal."

(Host) Emery says he was impressed with the musical arrangement by John Williams. He described it as "surprising the ear with some unexpected chords" - in keeping with the style of the famous film composer.
