(Host) A wind power developer is meeting with residents and officials in Rutland County about a project it wants to build on Grandpa's Knob.
As VPR's Nina Keck reports, it's a $100 million project that could include up to 20 wind turbines.
(Keck) Grandpa's Knob, a craggy mountain top between Castleton and West Rutland, made history 66 years ago this month. That's when a 110-foot wind tower began producing electricity.Though it operated less than five years, it ushered in a new era of megawatt-sized wind generators.
Today, a Connecticut-based company hopes to install much larger, 410-foot tall turbines on the site.
Brad King of Noble Environmental Power says they would generate close to 60 megawatts of electricity a year - enough to power more than 18,000 households.
He says company representatives have met with residents in Castleton, West Rutland and Hubbardon.
Tomorrow, he says they'll talk with officials in Pittsford.
(King) "One of the things we want to ensure is that the process is completely transparent essentially - that people know who Noble is and kind of know what the proposal is for the project."
(Keck) King says they're still gathering data and the state's public service review board will have the final say.
If all goes well, though, he says they could be up and running by 2010.
