With a population of fewer than 200, CaledoniaCounty’s smallest town is accustomed to being overlooked. The Civil War hero the town of Stannard was named after never even got around to visiting it. In the 1800s, Stannard residents tried to make the area part of Danville. The idea was rejected by Danville voters.
Stannard has no village, and the government closed its post office in 1912. Still, the town survives. In fact, residents would say it thrives. VPR's Steve Zind talked with two of them - Jan Lewandoski and Rachel Hexter - and filed this audio postcard.
