Waterbury rejects town, village merger

Waterbury has again rejected a proposal to merge the town and village.
Faced with an increase in the tax rate of about 12 cents over a five-year period, town residents voted against the proposal.
Elected officials have called for the elimination of redundancy in government operations and speeding municipal projects.
But some town residents said they were concerned about the long-term financial impacts.
The village passed the measure 274 - 50 while the town rejected it 891 - 576.
It's the third time in four years that the two municipalities have voted on merger.
The merger passed in 2004 but was rescinded after town voters appealed the original vote.
