It's one of the most iconic images in American history, and the subject of the much-anticipated new Clint Eastwood film, "Flags of our Fathers", which opens nationwide this Friday.
The movie is based on the best-selling book co-written by James Bradley and Ron Powers, who lives in Castleton.
Ron Powers spoke with Mitch Wertlieb and said the book would never have been written at all if not for a chance discovery by his co-author James Bradley. Bradley's father was one of the 3 men in the famous photograph to survive the war:
Note: Castleton State College is hosting a premiere showing of the film for veterans and their families next Sunday, October 22 at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Three Iwo Jima veterans and relatives of one of the flag raisers will attend. Ron Powers will introduce the film and special guests. A reception follows the 2 p.m. showing.
