Interview: Role of Primaries in Vermont Politics

(Steve Delaney) Vermont's primary election this year will be held early in September. Turnout will be even lighter than usual because both the Republicans and the Democrats have opted to pre-select their candidates for governor.

Does that make the primary obsolete as a political art form in Vermont? Paul Gillies is a former deputy secretary of state and an observer of the political process.

"Mr. Gillies, if both parties come to the primary having determined well in advance who's going to run for which office, doesn't that diminish a voter's participation in the electoral cycle?"
