"Gather your change for VPR "
David stopped by the VPR studios to drop off a large jar of change and this letter:
For several years, at the end of the day, when I'd empty my pockets onto the dresser I'd toss my change into a coffee cup. Then, when the change overflowed the cup, I started tossing it into a coffee can, then into a shoebox... but the shoebox didn't work very well. When the box was full I tried picking it up but it collapsed under the weight and poured a gallon or so of change onto the floor. Eventually I started using an Utz Pretzel jug. Each day into the jug would go another few coins.
I've been a long time fan, not only of VPR but of NPR in general... In spite of being such a devoted NPR listener I've never contributed a penny to support the stations. The jug I'm dropping off starts to redress that oversight.
It wouldn't surprise me that my negligent affection for NPR is typical of your listeners. I'd urge others to start gathering their change into coffee cups, milk jugs... and clearly Utz Pretzel containers work just fine. The few pennies (and nickels, dimes, and quarters) that accumulate day after day... well, clearly they add up.
