VPR Classical Begins Broadcasting at 94.5 from Wake Robin in Shelburne

(Colchester VT, May 5, 2008) - Vermont Public Radio is now broadcasting at 94.5 from Wake Robin in Shelburne. This new, low-power translator provides a stronger VPR Classical signal to much of Shelburne, Charlotte and South Burlington.

"We are thrilled to have been able to improve our VPR Classical signal to this area," said Mark Vogelzang, VPR's President and General Manager. "Vermont's geography complicates radio broadcasting in this region, and listeners have been asking VPR if we could fix the spotty reception in the area."

The new signal is considered a translator by the FCC, which means it takes VPR Classical's 90.9 FM signal coming from Terry Mountain in New York, and rebroadcasts it at 94.5 FM. Translators are low-power frequencies designed to provide stronger reception in small, concentrated areas. VPR also maintains a high-quality internet stream for online access to VPR Classical, and via HD-digital radio channels across the region.

"Many of my neighbors at Wake Robin depend on classical music," said Sam Chauncey, a Wake Robin resident. "Before, only about a third of the residents of Wake Robin could receive VPR Classical. Now everybody is very excited and pleased."

The Wake Robin translator is part of VPR's ongoing effort to bring VPR Classical to more of the region. "Expanding the availability of VPR Classical is a major priority for Vermont Public Radio," Vogelzang said. "We believe classical music deserves a home on the radio. At a time when many stations are abandoning classical music, VPR is going against the trend by creating a state-wide network dedicated to presenting classical music."

VPR Classical can be heard in Chittenden County at 90.9 WOXR. VPR Classical can also be heard at WNCH 88.1 Norwich, WVTQ 95.1 Sunderland/Manchester, 93.5 Bennington, 103.9 Hanover, 106.9 Manchester, 99.5 Middlebury, 99.5 Newbury, 106.9 Woodstock, 93.3 Rupert, 94.7 Bolton, 107.9 HD-2 Burlington, 88.7 HD-2 Rutland, 88.5 HD-2 Saint Johnsbury, and 89.5 HD-2 Windsor.

VPR was founded in 1977 as an independent community radio station. Its mission is to enrich the mind, nourish the spirit, and connect the community through distinctive radio programming. VPR is one of the most listened-to public radio stations in the country, serving residents of Vermont, neighboring states and Quebec.
