VPR Adds Spark and To The Best Of Our Knowledge to Saturday Afternoons
January 4, 2010
Beginning January 9, Vermont Public Radio brings listeners two new programs on Saturday afternoons: Spark and To The Best of Our Knowledge.
VPR is the first station in the U.S. to broadcast Spark, a production of CBC Radio. Hosted by Nora Young, Spark is a weekly audio blog of smart and unexpected trendwatching. Topics include dealing with too many emails, and how the digital age has changed the way we learn and retain information. Spark looks at how technology is changing the way we learn, communicate, work, and play.
To the Best of Our Knowledge won the Peabody Award for radio programming in 2004. Hosted by Jim Fleming, each program explores its subject through a diverse array of interviews, performances, and commentary. Programs topics range from the politics of James Bond to how salt shaped world history. It's produced by Wisconsin Public Radio and distributed by Public Radio International.
Additionally, VPR has created The VPR Saturday Special, which features a variety of programs including listener favorites Radio Lab and The Moth Radio Hour, plus VPR productions and national documentaries.
VPR's New Saturday Afternoon Schedule
Noon: The Splendid Table
1 p.m.: Spark
2 p.m.: To The Best Of Our Knowledge
3 p.m.: Marketplace Money
4 p.m.: The VPR Saturday Special
“We’re excited about VPR’s new sound of Saturday afternoons,” said Vice President for News and Programming John Van Hoesen. “We think VPR listeners will appreciate the technology reporting, humor, and lifestyle information of Spark, as well as the indepth, thought provoking journalism of To the Best of Our Knowledge.
“VPR listeners have also been very enthusiastic about Radio Lab, The Moth Radio Hour, and other specials that have aired this past year, so we decided to make the 4 p.m. hour a permanent fixture for these programs when they’re available.”
