Vermont Public Radio to Broadcast CCC Documentary

(Colchester, Vt., August 11, 2008) – Vermont Public Radio explores the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps in a special broadcast of "Those CCC Boys," Tuesday, August 19 at 8:30 a.m. during Morning Edition.

Hosted by VPR's Steve Delaney, the documentary examines the life and times of the young men who, in the heart of the Depression, found work, food, and a sense of purpose in the massive public works program. Listeners will hear from several octogenarians remembering the hard times of the 1930s and describing what it was like to construct dams, build roads, and plant trees.

"Those CCC Boys" also considers the effects of the Corps' work today. From the Green Mountains to the Grand Canyon, stone walls and buildings still stand in the country's parks as a testament to the CCC.

"The rich, historic sound that we hear in "Those CCC Boys" distinguishes public radio as the medium that connects our communities and our nation," said VPR President Mark Vogelzang. "First-person stories like these create lasting images in our mind."

VPR's half-hour documentary coincides with the 75th anniversary of the Civilian Conservation Corps. A gallery of historical CCC photographs may be viewed at VPR.net. Listeners who would like to share information or their own stories about the CCC are encouraged to post comments to a discussion group at VPR.net.
