VPR Classical Campaign for Addison County a Success

Colchester, Vt. -- Vermont Public Radio has successfully completed a capital campaign to build a full-power transmitter for VPR Classical in Addison County. The new signal at 90.1 FM will broadcast Vermont Public Radio’s 24-hour classical music service to a population of more than 83,000.

Engineers will begin building the transmitter in the spring. WOXM-90.1 FM will broadcast from Chipman Hill in Middlebury and provide a strong signal to most of Addison County, including Salisbury, Cornwall, Shoreham, Addison, New Haven, Vergennes, south to Brandon, and including some towns across Lake Champlain in New York.

The campaign began early this year with a goal of $346,000, gaining momentum in the last several months as the result of a $10,000 challenge gift from the Vermont Community Foundation.

“It’s wonderful to have such a generous outpouring of support for classical music on the radio,” said VPR President Robin Turnau. “We’d like to thank the Vermont Community Foundation, our tireless volunteers, and every donor who contributed to the campaign. We’re thrilled that this new transmitter will bring VPR Classical to listeners in Addison County. At a time when commercial classical stations are disappearing, the ongoing expansion of VPR Classical shows that Vermonters care about classical music and want it to be there for this generation and generations to come.”

Vermont Public Radio is working to expand the VPR Classical network to serve more of the region, with the goal of it being available statewide. VPR Classical is currently broadcasting to about 60% of the state’s population, and can also be heard on HD radio, some cable networks, and online at VPR.net.
