VPR Wins National Awards for Community Impact

April 28, 2009

Vermont Public Radio has been honored with two 2009 My Source Community Impact Awards from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). VPR was recognized for its 2008 Vermont Reads and My Vermont projects, for providing innovative programming and services that had a vital impact on the community.

For Vermont Reads, Vermont Public Radio collaborated with the Vermont Humanities to explore the life and work of poet Robert Frost in its annual one-book statewide community reading project, which brings communities and people of all ages together to read a book and engage in activities centered around it. In a special five-part documentary series, Vermont Public Radio opened the pages onto Frost’s life, his work and his impact.

VPR’s My Vermont project brought listeners together to discuss the value of Vermont life and the top challenges of the future. For the first time, VPR listeners were invited to share their thoughts on the air about what it's like to live in Vermont, the traditions they treasure, and their hopes for the future of the state.  VPR's My Vermont project also included special reports and Vermont Edition programs exploring in-depth the state's identity, affordability, Vermont's power future, health care costs, and the community's vision for the future.

“VPR’s number one priority is to produce programming that engages our listeners and has an impact on the community,” said VPR President Robin Turnau. “These awards recognize VPR’s tradition of service to the community, the dedication of our staff, and the devotion of our listeners.”

As a part of the award, Vermont Public Radio will receive a $2,000 grant from the CPB.
