VPR Brings "The World" to Listeners, 7pm-8pm Monday through Thursday

July 2, 2007

Beginning July 2, Vermont Public Radio brings listeners one-of-a-kind international news coverage with "The World". Airing Monday through Thursday evenings from 7pm - 8pm on VPR, host Lisa Mullins guides listeners through major issues and stories, linking global events directly to American concerns.

"The World's" coverage is provided by a global network of international journalists, in addition to access to the 250 BBC correspondents located around the world. This network of international journalists works in concert with the program's multinational team of producers and editors, bringing an exceptional depth of understanding and freshness of perspective found nowhere else in U.S. news coverage.

In addition to its ongoing coverage of breaking news and top world stories, "The World" has two regular feature segments: "World Music," showcasing world artists and their work, and the popular "GeoQuiz," in which you can test your knowledge of locales far and wide.

"The World" is a co-production of the BBC World Service, Public Radio International and WGBH Radio Boston.

"The World" joins VPR's programming schedule as Vermont Public Radio continues to expand its news effort. In addition to adding more international news coverage, VPR will grow its weekly news magazine, "Vermont Edition," into a daily program airing at noon beginning August 13. The daily "Vermont Edition" will provide listeners with a deeper connection with the news, events and people that define Vermont and its communities. With a goal to provide the greatest public service possible, VPR is broadcasting "Vermont Edition" at noon because there are many more listeners using the radio during the day.

"Switchboard," which had aired Tuesday and Thursday at 7pm, concluded production June 28, 2007 so its resources could be invested into VPR's expansion of "Vermont Edition" into a daily program. Christopher Lydon, host of Wednesday evening's program, "Open Source," announced it was stopping production effective July 1, 2007. The addition of "The World" moves Monday's evening programming back by one hour: "Speaking of Faith," previously heard at 7pm Monday, now airs at 8pm, followed by "Living on Earth" at 9pm. VPR can be heard at 107.9 FM in Burlington, 89.5 FM in Windsor, 88.7 FM in Rutland, 88.5 FM in St. Johnsbury, 94.3 FM in Bennington, 92.5 in Manchester, 94.5 in Brattleboro, 95.3 in Middlebury, 94.1 in Montpelier and online at vpr.net. VPR is also available in HD at 107.9-HD1 in northern Vermont, 89.5-HD1 in the Upper Valley and at 94.3-HD1 in Bennington.
