Director of Development

Vermont Public Radio is seeking an experienced, smart, high-energy, savvy and enthusiastic individual to oversee development efforts at the station. Reporting to the president, the director of development is responsible for executing the day-to-day operations of VPR’s successful, highly functional and experienced development department. The director of development will oversee the cultivation and growth of our 24,000-strong membership, our corporate underwriters that provide more than $1.5 M of support for each year, our 375 Producers Circle members, and our 140 Phillips Legacy Society members, and new sources of philanthropic and earned income.

Responsibilities include planning and conducting special campaigns, strategizing and participating in major gift and corporate solicitations, identifying, researching and cultivating prospects, engaging donors in conversations to match their interest with VPR's strategic priorities, writing compelling grant applications and case statements for support, using technology and social media to increase on-line giving, and looking for new and "outside the box" ways to raise the dollars needed to keep VPR financially strong.

The successful candidate will have extensive experience with major giving and capital fund-raising campaigns. Must have at least five years of management experience and have proven ability to set and meet realistic goals, establish work priorities, organize people and materials to reach goals, handle pressure well, evaluate and report results, and be an entrepreneurial self-starter. Controller

Vermont Public Radio is looking for an experienced accounting professional, with their CPA, to join an active finance and administration team working to support the mission of the station.  Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller is responsible for the overall management of the accounting and financial reporting functions at Vermont Public Radio.  The Controller will oversee the day-to-day management of VPR's Operating, Capital, and Investment Funds as well as provide support and service throughout the organization to streamline systems, increase integration, and ensure proper controls.

Responsibilities include supervising and managing the general ledger system (Software: Sage PFW, FAS, and FRx), establishing and coordinating implementation of accounting systems and control procedures, preparation and analysis of internal/external financial statements, oversight and verification of day-to-day accounting duties (A/P, A/R, and fixed asset tracking), reconciliations and month-end closings for all financial related systems, preparation and coordination of the annual audit.  The Controller will supervise and direct the work of an Accounting Associate. The successful candidate will have extensive experience in system and procedure set-up, a full grasp of GAAP, and familiarity with fund accounting and related FASB requirements.  Must have at least two years of management experience and have a proven ability to set and meet deadlines, establish work priorities, organize people and materials to reach goals, handle pressure well, evaluate and report results, and be an entrepreneurial self-starter.  Excellent project management, public speaking, writing and organization skills are required, as well as the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced, dynamic setting.

A CPA and a proven record of top caliber financial management and accounting are required.  Familiarity with the mission of public radio a must.

Vermont Edition Internship with VPR News

VPR offers three-month internships three times a year to college students interested in public radio news. Students seeking college credit for production experience in a broadcast newsroom are encouraged to apply. The internship is centered on VPR’s daily news magazine, Vermont Edition, and is focused on researching news topics, pitching stories, learning basic audio production, and assisting in tasks that keep an active newsroom running smoothly.

Internships provide hands-on experience and as well as a great reward educationally, but VPR is unable to provide compensation for the internship.

One candidate may be selected for each three-month internship:

  • September-December:
    Application deadline is July 15, decision by August 1

  • February-April:
    Application deadline is November 15, decision by December 10

  • June-August:
    Application deadline is March 30, decision by April 10

The specific dates of the internship will be determined with the selected candidate. The number of hours worked per week will based on VPR’s need and the candidate’s credit requirements.
