Marlboro Month: Stravinsky

Is it a concerto, or a domestic residence? Well, both. In 1938 Igor
Stravinsky was commissioned to write a chamber concerto by an American
diplomat for his 30th wedding anniversary. The diplomat's Washington,
D.C. estate was named "Dumbarton Oaks" - so that's what Stravinsky named
the resulting piece. We'll hear it this morning as part of our ongoing
Marlboro Month, celebrating the 60th anniversary season of the Marlboro
Music Festival. (By the way - these days Dumbarton Oaks is public facility, operating as a research library and collection of Byzantine scholarship and artifacts.)
