Diminutio

"Diminutio" is described as the Renaissance practice of embellishing a
melody by playing it more quickly and with notes of shorter rhythmic
value. The effect is a slightly unsettling, creating a push and pull
with the movement of the music. This morning, several selections from
lutenist Rolf Lislevand's recording dedicated to that technique.
