Canada's top stories of the year parallel America's in some ways.  For example, the economy and Afghanistan have been much in the news.  But other developments have been unique to Canada, like the Prime Minister terminating ('prorogueing') Parliament to avoid a no-confidence vote - and the failed effort to bring another hockey franchise to the country.
