Cancer Support; Population Media Center
Friday, 12/26/08 Noon
People who are battling cancer often have a lot of medical support, but when it comes to handling the emotional toll in everyday life, a different kind of assistance is needed. One such group, "Hellenbach" in Addison County, invited Jane Lindholm in for an intimate look at life with cancer. (You can contact the group at hellenbach@yahoo.com) (Listen)
Also on the program: how do you solve issues like family planning, disease prevention, and
environmental destruction in developing countries? The surprising answer
from one organization is: soap operas. Host Jane Lindholm talks with
Bill Ryerson of the Population Media Center, a Shelburne-based non-profit
that is getting results with its pop culture approach to important
problems.

And a filmmaker documents a quirky public space with a life - and a web
site- of it's own: the Harmony Parking Lot in Brattleboro is full of
shoppers and tourists getting in and out of their cars. But since the
1960s it's also been something of a hangout. Young people express their
differences and the whole town is their audience. Writer Theresa Maggio
spent a year and a half filming the life and culture of the Harmony Lot
with her camera, and shares what she captured with VPR's Susan Keese.
