Meeting the Housing Needs of Vermont's Elders

Listen

Tuesday, 07/01/08 Noon

According to projections, elderly Vermonters will make up nearly a quarter of the state's population by the year 2030. With the region's harsh winters and rural isolation in mind, senior advocates and some communities are planning for the challenges that will only multiply as the population ages. With Nancy Eldridge of the nonprofit Cathedral Square Corporation -- one of the groups actively planning for the senior citizen explosion -- we talk about options and ideas now available or in the works, from home-based services and home-sharing to senior housing and assisted living. And Robert Crego, Executive Director of West River Valley Senior Housing, tells how his community planned an award-winning residential complex for its elders.(Listen)

Also on the program, Rutland Herald business reporter Bruce Edwards gives us an update on Vermont's progress toward becoming an ‘E-state,' where high-speed broadband Internet and other high-tech services are available to everyone.(Listen)

And we celebrate the centennial of the much-loved book, Anne of Green Gables, at a tea in Essex. (Listen)
