Mental Health Parity
Late last week the House approved legislation that would strengthen Vermont's 10-year-old mental health parity law--earlier in the session, the senate passed a similar bill. The bill is now in committee being reconciled before being sent over to the Governor.
Vermont's mental health parity law requires health insurance companies to provide comparable coverage for physical and mental health conditions. The legislation gives the state Department of Banking, Insurance, Securities and Health Care Administration, or BISHCA, specific authority to oversee how health insurance companies comply with the parity law. We talk with Rep. Mike Fisher, vice Chair of the House Human Services committee, who was active in passing the new Mental Health Parity law.
Also in the program, officiating a marriage ceremony. A bill in the
Legislature would allow individuals to preside over a ceremony of a
loved on or friend. We talk to Justice of the peace Zeke Church about
the job of marrying couples, and solemnizing a marriage or civil union.
