Education Commissioner Richard Cate

Last week Vermont Education Commissioner Richard Cate said Vermont schools aren't meeting the needs of half of its students. He was responding to recent standardized test scores which show no change from previous years. Over the past year, Cate has been pushing for major changes, including consolidating school districts. Richard Cate joins us on the program to talk about what he means when he says the education system needs to be revamped. (Listen)

Also, we explore the connection between St. Michael's College and the Ilula Orphan program in Tanzania. The college runs a service learning project in the African country, and this month visitors from the orphan program are in Vermont to share the stories of these children. (Listen)
