Prosecuting and Defending Murder in the Green Mountains
Vermont's murder rate is among the lowest in the nation, at about 11 or 12 homicides annually. But it seems there's always at least one high profile case front and center in the headlines. In this episode we talk with Vermont Defender General Matt Valerio and veteran prosecutor John Treadwell of the Criminal Division of the Vermont Attorney General's Office about the prosecution and defense of homicides in the Green Mountains. Our guests help
demystify rules of evidence, jury selection, plea bargains and other aspects of these cases. We also explore how new technologies like DNA and even cell phones are changing the way violent crimes are processed -- and how the media and the "CSI Effect" are impacting the criminal justice system. (Listen)
Also on the program,we talk with Valley News Reporter John Gregg about The Block, a Windsor County landmark that's about to get a face lift. (Listen)
And we hear from VPR commentator Willem Lange about how advocates and detractors are now lining up to tackle the issue of same sex marriage. (Listen)
