Used daily by millions of Americans, Spanglish-the intercourse of Spanish and English-is becoming a major cultural force. Amherst College Professor Ilan Stavans discusses Spanglish and its political clout in a lecture given at Burlington's Fletcher Free Library on October 3, 2007. A VPR.net exclusive, The Sounds of Spanglish is presented in collaboration with the Vermont Humanities Council.
Professor Stavans talk was part of the Vermont Humanities Council First Wednesdays series, a once-a-month humanities forum that brings nationally and regionally renowned speakers to Vermont libraries for public lectures.
Stavans is the Lewis-Sebring Professor in Latin American and Latino Culture at Amherst College. He is editor in chief of the four volume Encyclopedia Latina: History, Culture, and Society in the United States and author of the Hispanic Condition and Spanglish: The Making of a New American Language, among other publications. He lives in Amherst, MA.
