Enforcing Fire and Safety Codes for Rental Housing

Renters’ advocates say the state’s fire, health and safety codes are fragmented and that enforcement is almost non-existent for those landlords who ignore the rules. They say the situation relegates some low-income families to rental housing that is both unsafe and unhealthy. But many landlords say that in Vermont, tenants hold the upper hand. We look at a St. Albans-based court case and a bill before the legislature that would consolidate the state’s rental housing codes.

Also on the program, we check in on the annual migration of snow geese through Vermont.
