Robin Turnau's Fire Cider

Fire Cider is a homemade cold remedy that I first learned about from herbalist Rosemary Gladstar.  The cider needs to steep for about six weeks, but it is well worth the time and effort!

In a large glass jar, mix:

1 quart organic apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup of grated ginger root
1/2 cup of grated fresh horseradish root
1/8 cup of chopped garlic
1/2 cup of chopped onion
1 tsp cayenne pepper

Cover tightly and steep for a minimum of 6 weeks.  Strain the liquid into a clean jar and compost the solids. I keep mine in the refrigerator, but you don't really need to.

When you feel a cold coming on, place one tablespoon in a mug and add honey to taste. Fill the mug with hot water and drink!

Cheryl Willoughby's Cold Comfort Cocktail

3 cups VERY hot water
1/2 c. honey (may need a little more to counteract the lemon juice)
1/2 c. lemon juice (fresh squeezed is best)
4 heaping Tbsp.freshly peeled and grated ginger root
2 herbal mint teabags - I like spearmint
1/4 c. bourbon whiskey (optional)

Put water & honey in a large glass, stir until dissolved. Add lemon juice, teabags, ginger & bourbon (if using). Let it sit until the teabags are steeped, then remove the bags. May need to microwave a minute or two to serve this very hot. When the liquid has been drained, chew up the ginger pulp - it's very warm and helps relieve your sore throat. Feel better!
