"When the Emperor Was Divine" by Julie Otsuka
In the weeks after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, military leaders pressed for the power to "relocate" people from areas considered critical to national defense.
What followed was the internment of as many as 120,000 Japanese nationals and Japanese-Americans.
In collaboration with the Vermont Humanities Council, VPR is participating in the annual Vermont Reads project, a statewide reading initiative.
This year's book is "When the Emperor was Divine," a fictional account by Julie Otsuka that examines the internment through the lives of one Japanese-American family.
