Shackleton's Boat Journey The "James Caird II," a replica of the original, being launched from the Hanseatic to attempt the 800-mile Elephant Island-South Georgia crossing. The European crew of 4, led by German Arved Fuchs, sailed in mild summer weather, but eventually had to be rescued when the weather got a little rough. Here the masts are tied to the deck before the voyage. photo by Christian Bierlein |
