About Camel’s Hump Radio

Camel's Hump Radio is a locally-produced half-hour radio program that encourages reading in families and the community. Produced by Vermont Public Radio (VPR), the program is developed specifically for children age 7-12. The 13-week series airs Sundays at 7:00 P.M. and is now in its fifth season. The program is hosted by nationally renowned family entertainer Bill Harley.

Each episode is built around a compelling excerpt of a book written for children ages 7-12. The excerpt is read by a professional actor, accented with music. The goal is to get listeners so involved in the story that they seek the book out to finish reading it. A companion website allows listeners to learn more about the featured books and additional related material.

Vermont Public Radio is a state-wide network and one of the top ranked public radio stations in the country in terms of listeners per capita. More than 160,000 listeners tune in to VPR each week. VPR can be heard at 107.9 FM in Burlington, 89.5 FM in Windsor, 88.7 FM in Rutland, 88.5 FM in St. Johnsbury, 94.3 FM in Bennington. The station also provides VPR Classical a 24 hour classical music service heard at 88.1FM in Norwich. Both VPR and VPR Classical are streamed online at vpr.net.

Listener Demand/Educational Need
Camel's Hump Radio was created in response to VPR listeners' desire for quality children's literature on the radio. The program also supports the Vermont Department of Education's efforts to increase reading comprehension and analysis. Hearing stories read aloud and engaging in conversation about books are crucial elements in creating thoughtful, analytical, passionate readers. Listeners have told us of their now weekly ritual of gathering around the radio to listen to the program as a family.
