The state is looking to cut water pollution that reaches Lake Champlain by imposing new regulations on farms and by enforcing
phosphorus limits on a sewage treatment plant in Waterbury.
The
international organization that deals with issues in the Lake Champlain area is working to design a study to find ways to
reduce future flooding in the lake and the Canadian river that drains it.
Scientists who’ve been
tracking Lake Champlain’s fish populations say that, while lake trout are in
ample supply, the surviving adults are exclusively hatchery-raised fish.
The Vermont Department of Environmental
Conservation is working to reduce water pollution in the Lake Champlain watershed by requiring a number of municipalities and
other groups to do more to control storm water runoff.
Researchers
say there’s no quick way to control and eliminate the invasive spiny water flea
from Lake George, so they’re recommending ways to try to keep it from
spreading to Lake Champlain.
Officials say a 19th century anchor from a Lake Champlain freighter has been found off a Burlington beach and it will likely be transported to a deeper,
shipwreck preserve.
The Shelburne Fire Department has proposed purchasing a used
fire rescue boat to use on Lake Champlain for approximately
$36,000. If purchased, it would be the only firefighting boat in the area.
A bad summer for water
quality in Lake Champlain seems to be getting worse. Over the past week, hot
weather, low water levels and a huge bloom of blue green algae have combined to
cause a massive fish kill in Missisquoi Bay.
