week, Vermont officials announced plans to continue a partnership
with a Canadian airline that brings skiers from Toronto to Burlington. The
state is putting tourism dollars behind the effort in hopes of expanding it in
the future.
As
the nation’s demographics change, Vermont tourism officials are beginning to respond. In
recent months the state has begun taking the first steps to attract African-American tourists.
Ever
since civil union legislation was passed 12 years ago, Vermont has been a popular destination for gay and lesbian
couples. But only in the last year has
the state begun to market to them.

machine. The state says it’s seeking an authentic, uncensored
voice to promote tourism online.
Killington’s
Select Board is
planning to make over the entrance to the central Vermont resort town along Route 4 and Route 100. The goal, town officials say, is to create "a true
sense of arrival" to the biggest ski area of the east.
Preliminary
statistics show that Vermont’s tourism industry weathered the fall foliage season
well, despite the damage from Tropical Storm Irene. But there are growing
concerns that another national recession could affect the state’s fragile
revenue base.
