Despite an urgent plea by scientists who want the Champlain Canal shut off to stop the spread of an invasive species, New York State says closing the canal is not feasible.

For a tiny creature, the spiny waterflea is generating a great deal of concern. The invasive species has been spotted in the Lake Champlain Canal, just two locks away from the southern end of the lake.
