Putney is celebrating the
start of reconstruction on its general store. Townspeople pulled together to rebuild
after it was damaged by fire in 2008. Only a year later, a second fire set
by an arsonist destroyed the store.
Residents of Putney say
their twice-burned general store will
rise again from the ashes. Construction of a new store – made of local timber –
is expected to begin this summer. The big question now is:
Who will be behind the counter?
After enduring two fires, the Putney General
Store might re-open. On Monday night, the Putney Historical
Society will host a community gathering to update the status of a rebuilding
project being planned for the site where the store – a community fixture since
the 19th century – once stood.
